Tchat Goji – Kashmiri delicacy prepared with Turnips and Tikka masala
Do you love potatoes? How can anyone hate potatoes? I love potatoes and love anything prepared with it- be it curry, fry, biryani, mashed potatoes or boiled ones. In fact, I love every root vegetable – turnip, carrot, potatoes, beets, radish. I have been always attracted to the purplish tiny radishes but then I never had clue of any dish made out of it. Turnips always appeared as an alien vegetable for me. But then, I know they are richer in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Among the other root vegetables, turnips are low calorie. Every time, when we visit nearby grocery stores, I do see them very fresh. I never picked them! Yes, you heard me- I never picked them. The other day when I tasted turnip salad, it was crunchy and tasted much like a radish. I wanted to try it at my kitchen but I being “Typical Me” – wanted to pep it up with spices. We, South Indians, won’t use it in a lot of our dishes. When I surfed, I stumbled upon Kashmiri dishes prepared with it. They had a lot of options to choose from and I chose a simple luscious dish prepared with turnip and spices. It differs from other fry items as it uses Tikka masala instead of normal spice powders. Here it is – Tchat Goji
Tchat Goji is a Kashmiri delicacy prepared using turnips. Turnips are usually underrated vegetable but this is an uncomplicated delicious recipe prepared using it. Turnips are cooked with spices and finally mashed with the ladle. They can be prepared in few minutes and tastes deliciously with roti or rice. Stuff these mashed turnips inside the roti and enjoy on the go or enjoy with plain white rice.
Ingredients:
- 1 Turnip
- 2 Tablespoon Oil
- 3 Dried Red Chilies
- ½ teaspoon Tikka Masala
- ¼ teaspoon Hing
- ½ cup Water
- Pinch of Sugar
- ½ teaspoon Salt
Method:
- Wash turnips and cut them into thin wafer-like slices
- In a non-stick pan, add oil and heat it over medium flame
- Once the oil is hot, add turnips, hing, sugar, and salt
- Add dried red chilies and combine them well
- Cook the turnips with lid covered on high flame for about 6-7 minutes until they become soft. Ensure to stir them occasionally to avoid it sticking to the bottom of the pan
- Once turnips become soft, add tikka masala and mix them evenly
- Now, add water to the pan and cook until the water is absorbed completely
- Gently mash turnips with the back of your ladle. I haven’t mashed them as I would love to enjoy turnips as it is rather than mashed one
- The authentic dish calls for mashing turnips. Serve TChat goji either by stuffing inside roti or serve with plain white rice
