Hello everyone, Continuing our adventures in Costa Rica, this post is all about our magical time in Monteverde. We stayed at Hotel Senda Monteverde, part of the luxurious Cayuga Collection, and it was nothing short of spectacular. This vacation was a surprise celebration for Sandy Daddy, and every detail, from our accommodations to our itinerary, was planned by me. Senda Monteverde was a hidden gem nestled in the cloud forest, surrounded by banana plants, buzzing hummingbirds, and grazing agoutis. Our stay included complimentary entry to the Aguti Wildlife Preserve. Although it was a bit pricey, Little R and I wanted to treat Sandy Daddy, and he absolutely loved it. The hotel offered campfire evenings and free events like bracelet making, yoga, and cooking classes. Dining at the hotel’s restaurant was pure bliss, and we enjoyed dinners there both nights.

Day 3: Don Juan Coffee Tour
We arrived in Monteverde around 2 PM on day three and headed straight for the Don Juan Coffee, Cocoa, and Sugar Cane Tour that evening. This tour was highly recommended, and it absolutely lived up to the hype! It was a fantastic 3-in-1 experience where we delved into coffee cultivation, cocoa and chocolate making, and sugar cane cultivation.
Set amidst lush green fields, the tour also featured tropical fruit cultivation, and Little R had a blast collecting fruits. We learned about various types of coffee, sampled different brews, and even prepared the “drink of the gods,” savoring every drop. The rain didn’t dampen our spirits—it only added to the unforgettable experience. We also learned about medium roast, dark roast, and how to drink each type, as well as about green coffee. Don Juan offers a variety of tours, and you can book them online through their website.
Day 4: Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve
The following day, we embarked on an adventure to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve, arriving bright and early at 7:30 AM.
Nestled in the misty mountains of Costa Rica, the Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve is a natural sanctuary that beckons adventurers and nature enthusiasts alike. Spanning over 10,500 hectares (26,000 acres), this pristine biological reserve is renowned for its exceptional biodiversity and captivating landscapes. The Monteverde Cloud Forest is celebrated for its rich biodiversity, housing over 2,500 plant species, including countless orchids, ferns, and towering trees draped in epiphytes. It’s also a haven for elusive wildlife, with over 400 bird species, such as the resplendent quetzal and the colorful toucan, fluttering among the trees. Visitors may also spot mammals like howler monkeys swinging through the canopy, as well as unique creatures like the elusive jaguarundi and the agile ocelot.
Exploring the preserve is a journey through lush greenery and mist-laden air. The trails wind through diverse habitats, from dense montane forests to serene cloud forests, offering opportunities to witness the intricate interplay of flora and fauna. Guided tours are available for those seeking expert insights into the forest’s ecology and wildlife, ensuring a deeper appreciation of its natural wonders.
Although tickets can be booked online ahead of time, there aren’t any strict capacity limits, so we opted to purchase our tickets at the entrance. Guided tours can also be reserved or at the entrance, and while we initially planned to explore on our own, we decided to join a guided tour for $50 to make sure we didn’t miss any wildlife. Little R was absolutely thrilled to spot a coati right as we entered the park.
Our guide was full of fascinating insights about the cloud forest, and although bird sightings were limited, we did hear plenty of birdsongs and spotted some warblers, hummingbirds, and agoutis along the trails. Even if wildlife sightings are sparse, simply closing your eyes and absorbing the magical ambiance of the cloud forest is an experience.
Tips:
- When visiting the Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve, it’s essential to come prepared for the cloud forest’s unpredictable weather.
- A raincoat or poncho, sturdy footwear, and binoculars for wildlife viewing are recommended.
- Visitors should also respect the rules and guidelines to minimize their impact on the environment and maximize their enjoyment of this natural wonder.
Monteverde Hummingbird Gallery
The Monteverde Hummingbird Gallery is a vibrant haven for hummingbird enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. Nestled near the entrance of the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, the gallery offers an up-close experience with these captivating, colorful creatures. With numerous feeders attracting dozens of hummingbird species, visitors are treated to a dazzling display of fluttering wings and iridescent feathers. Little R was absolutely enchanted by the tiny birds darting around in every direction, a spectacle that truly captures the essence of Monteverde’s rich biodiversity.
Adjacent to the gallery is Café Colibri, a cozy spot to relax and soak in the lively atmosphere. The cafe offers a selection of local snacks and beverages, making it a perfect place to take a break and watch the hummingbirds up close. We enjoyed a delightful lunch there, surrounded by the cheerful hum of these fascinating birds. It’s a must-visit spot for anyone exploring the wonders of Monteverde.
Day 5: Exploring Selvatura Park in Monteverde
Our adventure in Monteverde led us to the incredible Selvatura Park, a must-visit destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. Nestled in the heart of the Monteverde Cloud Forest, Selvatura Park offers a variety of activities that allow visitors to experience the beauty and biodiversity of this unique ecosystem.
Our visit to Selvatura Park included the hanging bridges, butterfly gardens, and sloth habitat. Due to rain, we explored the sloth habitat and butterfly gardens first, saving the hanging bridges for afternoon. You can book the tickets for tours based on your interest in their website.
Butterfly Gardens:
Selvatura Park is also home to one of the largest butterfly gardens in the Americas, housing a vibrant array of butterflies. The gardens are home to over 30 species of butterflies, all native to Costa Rica, fluttering around in a spacious and beautifully designed habitat that mimics their natural environment.
As you stroll through the gardens, you’ll be greeted by a kaleidoscope of colors as the butterflies’ flit from flower to flower. One of the highlights is the majestic Blue Morpho butterfly, with its vibrant blue wings that seem to glow in the sunlight. Another fascinating species is the Glasswing butterfly, known for its translucent wings that give it an ethereal appearance. You can also spot the iconic Monarch butterfly, famous for its incredible migratory journey, and the Owl butterfly, easily recognizable by the eye-like patterns on its wings.
The gardens provide a wonderful opportunity to learn about the lifecycle of butterflies, from caterpillars to chrysalises to fully-fledged adults. The knowledgeable guides offer insights into the behaviors and characteristics of different species, making the experience both educational and enchanting. Little R was captivated by the butterflies’ vibrant colors and gentle flight, especially when a few landed on him.
Sloth Habitat:
Another highlight of Selvatura Park is the sloth habitat, where visitors can observe these gentle creatures up close. The habitat is designed to mimic the sloths’ natural environment, providing a safe and comfortable space for them to thrive. Watching the sloths slowly move through the trees was a peaceful and mesmerizing experience. For Little R, watching the sloths was a magical experience, and he was fascinated by their relaxed demeanor and unique way of life. The habitat not only provides a chance to see sloths up close but also raises awareness about the importance of preserving their natural habitats.
Selvatura Park Hanging Bridges – Walking among the clouds
A must-visit for anyone in Monteverde, the hanging bridges offer an experience like no other. Our visit to Selvatura Park’s Hanging Bridges was a highlight of our trip to Monteverde and an experience that left us in awe of the incredible beauty of the cloud forest.
The Selvatura Hanging Bridges tour offers a unique opportunity to explore the Monteverde cloud forest from a breathtaking perspective. The park features a series of eight suspended bridges that stretch across the lush canopy, providing panoramic views of the dense forest below. As we walked along the bridges, we felt like we were floating among the clouds, surrounded by the rich greenery and diverse wildlife that make this area so special.
While Little R was initially apprehensive about crossing the swinging bridges, he quickly overcame his fear and embraced the adventure. The bridges are sturdy and well-maintained, making them accessible to visitors of all ages. The feeling of walking high above the forest floor was exhilarating, and it offered a vantage point to see the forest in a way that ground-level trails simply can’t provide.
Each bridge offers a unique perspective and a chance to spot various wildlife. We took our time crossing each one, pausing to admire the stunning views and listen to the symphony of sounds that filled the air. From birds singing to the gentle rustling of leaves, it was a sensory delight. Though we didn’t spot much wildlife during our walk, the experience was still incredibly rewarding. We were surrounded by the sounds of birds, the fluttering of butterflies, and the occasional rustle of leaves as creatures moved through the forest.
Tips for Visiting the Hanging Bridges
- Bring a Raincoat: The cloud forest is known for its unpredictable weather, so be prepared for rain showers, even on sunny days.
- Take Your Time: Don’t rush through the bridges. Pause to take in the views and appreciate the beauty of the forest around you.
- Capture the Moment: Bring a camera to capture the stunning scenery but remember to also put it down and be present in the moment.
- Stay Hydrated: Carry a water bottle to stay refreshed, as the walk can be lengthy and the climate humid.
- Enjoy the Experience: The bridges offer a once-in-a-lifetime experience to see the forest from a unique perspective, so take a moment to savor the beauty and tranquility of the surroundings.
For those seeking even more adventure, Selvatura Park offers a variety of activities, including zip-lining through the cloud forest, a reptile and amphibian exhibit, and a walk through the hummingbird garden. The park provides a comprehensive experience that caters to all ages and interests. Unfortunately, we couldn’t do them with Little R, as he’s too young.
Day 6: Monteverde Butterfly Gardens and Monteverde Frog Pond
Day 6 dawned with gentle rain, prompting us to plan a leisurely day indoors after our adventurous escapades on the hanging bridges at Selvatura Park the previous day. Little R, our young explorer, had a special fondness for butterflies, so we decided to revisit the Monteverde Butterfly Garden, where he could marvel at the vibrant colors and delicate wings of these enchanting creatures.
The butterfly garden welcomed us with its serene atmosphere and a kaleidoscope of fluttering butterflies. Little R’s eyes lit up with joy as butterflies danced around him, landing gently on his outstretched hands. It was a delightful experience to see him so enthralled by nature’s beauty. (Note: No prior reservations required)
After spending peaceful moments in the butterfly garden, we headed to the Monteverde Frog Pond – Ranario. This unique attraction allowed us to observe both diurnal and nocturnal frogs in their natural habitats. Despite the rain outside, the frog pond provided a fascinating glimpse into the lives of these amphibians, with Little R eagerly spotting frogs hidden among the foliage. (Note: With a single ticket, you can visit Frog Pond twice – one during the day and second visit at night)
The decision to visit these indoor activities turned out to be perfect as it shielded us from the heavy rain while offering engaging experiences that enriched our understanding of Monteverde’s diverse ecosystems. After two days of exhilarating adventures, slowing down and immersing ourselves in these quieter pursuits was a refreshing change.
Day 7: Curicancha Reserve – A birder’s paradise
I had originally planned a guided birding tour at Curicancha Reserve for day six, but it had to be canceled due to heavy rainfall. To visit the reserve early, at 6:30 AM before it officially opens, bird-watching tours must be reserved through their website. Curicancha is renowned among bird enthusiasts as a paradise for birding. Although tours for day seven were fully booked, we decided to try our luck and visit independently if the weather improved.
At Curicancha Reserve, we explored the Alondra Trail in hopes of sighting the resplendent quetzal. Our patience was rewarded when we spotted one perched majestically on the famous avocado tree. Sitting beneath it, we were captivated by the beauty of this magnificent bird. The resplendent quetzal is celebrated for its vivid plumage and strikingly long tail feathers, making it one of the world’s most beautiful birds. Witnessing this iconic species was truly a highlight of our journey through Monteverde.
During our visit, we also delighted in sightings of toucans, the spotted bellbird, and various hummingbirds. During our visit, we couldn’t resist capturing moments with Little R and Sandy Daddy amidst the misty beauty of the cloud forest. Little R, more fascinated by avocado trees than the elusive quetzal, enthusiastically gathered avocado seeds and even picked an abundance of guava fruits along the way.
After our visit, we visited Monteverde Cheese Factory, a beloved destination nestled in the scenic Monteverde region of Costa Rica, where we indulged in their ice creams. It’s renowned for producing high-quality cheeses using traditional methods that highlight the region’s rich dairy heritage. Visitors can previously tour the factory to learn about the cheese-making process and sample a variety of cheeses, from creamy soft cheeses to aged and sharp varieties, but they no longer provide tours. Additionally, the factory’s ice cream is a favorite among visitors, offering a refreshing treat after exploring the nearby cloud forests. Don’t miss the opportunity to taste their delicious cheeses and indulge in their creamy ice creams when you visit Monteverde!
We enjoyed all our lunches at local sodas, where we savored Batidos, a must-try drink with milk. We indulged in various flavors such as soursop, papaya, mango, and pineapple, sampling nearly every variety available.
Drive to La Fortuna
After our morning at Curicancha, we had breakfast and drove to La Fortuna. The drive was scenic, with mangoes, pineapple farms, and fresh guava along the way. We stopped to pick lemons and enjoy countless fresh coconuts. The journey was as delightful as the destination, offering a glimpse into the lush landscapes and abundant produce of Costa Rica.
Monteverde truly captivated our hearts with its enchanting cloud forests, vibrant wildlife, and serene beauty. Our time here was an unforgettable part of our Costa Rican adventure, leaving us with cherished memories and a deep appreciation for the wonders of nature. Stay tuned for more of our adventures as we continue exploring this incredible country!
